1ST Gear – 1st April 2005 to 31st March 2007

Funded through Government Office Direct Funding (ESF Objective 3) a Guidance Services led Connexions West Yorkshire partnership project targeting 300 unemployed 16-19 year olds across the Wakefield District at risk of becoming not in employment, education or training. 1st Gear focuses on access to advice and guidance and intensive mentoring support designed specifically to address barriers to employment. Young people on this project will have the opportunity to develop key skills which address increased confidence and motivation, communication skills, decision making, ownership and responsibility for decisions and choices made, adaptability, reliability, flexibility interpersonal and team working skills, initiative and a willingness and desire to understand the working environment. Delivery takes place across the whole Wakefield District, in venues to meet the needs of clients e.g. cafes, partner’s premises or community centres.
